Career Development Resources

In this section of the website we are building a comprehensive and continuously updating directory of resources and links to helpful information.

Please feel free to submit any links you feel would be suitable for this collection. If you run a website that is suitable for jobseekers we will be please to enter into a reciprocal arrangement where appropriate.

These resources are divided into four main sections to reflect the process of career management and job searching.

1 Career Planning and Management

In this section you'll find information to help you learn about the right type of work and environment for you. You'll also find information to help you make the transition from one area or form of work to another. This includes self-employment, retirement, returning after a career break, and going part time amongst other things. There are also useful resources to do with redundancy, benefits, financial planning and the legal side of employment.

2 Researching the Career Environment

Now that you are ready to move your career to the next stage, it's time to explore the possibilities to find out what is feasible and realistic for you. In the research section you'll find resources covering different industries and functions including links to trade press, general recruitment websites (useful for developing an understanding of different types of work in terms of the general requirements and salary ranges) and industry associations. This section also includes information about networking as a tool for finding out about different employment and career possibilities.

3 Job Search

When you are reasonably clear of the direction you wish to take, you may have one or two possibilities ahead of you. Now is the time to begin searching for specific roles. In this section you'll find links to Generalist recruitment websites covering most industries and functions, links to databases and directories that will help you to draw up lists of organisations to target, and information about newspaper and magazine advertising.

4 Applications and Interviews

Here you'll find information and links to do with CV's, application forms, covering letters, speculative approaches, interview preparation and offer negotiations - everything to do with securing and succeeding at the interview stage.
